Stone drifted back to the dining room, deep in thought, to find Raider perched on the table, purring as Ian scratched his ears. âWell. Youâve certainly made a good impression on him.â
âBetter than on them, I think.â
âOh, I wouldnât say that.â He sat back down, but the cat remained where he was. âCanât expect them to be on board right away when I spring something that big on them without warning, but they liked you. Youâll see.â
âMaybe.â
âTrust meâthey did. I think you and Verity will get on well. Iâm glad youâll have a chance to chat with her without me around.â
His easy grin widened. âYeah. I want to hear more about this story of you and Mom and Rocky Horror.â
âYes, well,â Stone said sourly, âyouâll have to ask Verity about that. Youâre not getting it from me.â
Ian gave Raider a final skritch and stood. âAnyway, I should clear out too. Thanks for introducing me to your friends, Dad. It means a lot to me. Makes me feel like youâve accepted me.â
âIanâI have accepted you. Youâre my son.â He took a breath. âI wasâstill am, to be truthfulâa bit overwhelmed, but Iâm alsoâ¦more pleased than you can imagine. Iâve never been any good at showing that sort of thing. It always feels awkward and insincere, so youâll have to forgive me if it looks like Iâm stumbling about like an idiot. But youâve got to believe me. Iâm glad youâre here, and Iâm looking forward to getting to know you.â
âEven if I wash out as a mage?â
Stone gripped his shoulder. âIan, I donât give a damn if youâre a fantastic mage, a mediocre one, or no mage at all. It doesnât matterâIâm happy we found each other regardless.â
Ian gave him an odd, sidelong glance, almost as if he were evaluating not only his words, but any hidden meanings that might be present. âYeah,â he said at last, in a faraway tone. âMe too.â
